City Council approves Rear Main Street funding reallocation

Gardner Council reallocates $800K after National Grid electrical costs surge. On a 9-1 vote with one recusal, the Council approved redeploying $800,000 in bond funds to cover electrical utility work on the Rear Main Street project after National Grid estimated costs at $922,357.33, versus the original 2023 estimate of $260,000. Director Jason Stevens attributed the delay to the utility not finalizing designs until February 2026.
The Council also unanimously advanced two ordinances restructuring non-union employee compensation and endorsed the city's $1.024 million FY2026 Community Development Block Grant plan.
