City Council streamlines sign approval with code reorganization

City Council · Meeting of April 6, 2026

Gardner City Council proposes relocating sign regulations from zoning code to general ordinances. Mayor Michael Nicholson and Councillor Judy Mack, co-sponsor of the ordinance, cited business feedback on costly zoning approvals, pointing to delays at Timpany Crossroads, a Bank of America kiosk at Price Chopper, and Sawa Asian Bistro. The city's ARPA-funded sign and façade improvement program saw sign grants largely unused as businesses avoided the approval process.

The Council voted to accept the ordinance on May 18.
